Kwashiorkor

 

Kwashiorkor is an acute form of childhood protein energy malnutrition.  The presence of edema caused by poor nutrition defines Kwashiorkor. Kwashiorkor is protein wasting with the presence of edema and very difficult to completely recover from.

Symptoms of Kwashiorkor

  • Hair changes (change in color or texture)

  • Changes in skin pigment

  • Decreased muscle mass

  • Diarrhea

  • Failure to gain weight and grow

  • Fatigue

  • Swelling (edema)

  • Damaged immune system

  • Large belly 

  • Lethargy or apathy

  • Loss of muscle mass

  • Shock (late stage)
